What do teachers need to implement service-learning in their schools?
What will assist teachers new to service-learning as they get started?
GoToServiceLearning emerged out of a consideration of these core questions between several former teachers and quickly grew into a discussion between organizations eager to advance service-learning across the country. The answer? Present samples of excellent practice in a format that is easy for teachers to understand and incorporate into their own teaching experience. Provide simple service-learning lesson plans as a model of how the process of service-learning inspires and connects students to their community while incorporating and integrating state academic standards.
Introducing GoToServiceLearning.org – an interactive website housing a database of quality service-learning lesson plans from across the country, all of which are tied to state academic standards. The launch occurred at the 2009 National Middle School Association Conference with the presentation of a completed website and catalogue of lessons focusing on the middle school grade levels. The featured plans – each written and successfully implemented by teachers – vary in their address of service experiences and academic subject areas, as well as in intensity and duration, demonstrating the adaptability of service-learning to multiple settings.
With your participation, GoToServiceLearning will continue to add new high-quality service-learning lesson plans across the K-12 spectrum, serving as a valuable resource for K-12 teachers. Come visit us often! See what experienced service-learning practitioners are doing, pick up a lesson or two to try out in your own classroom, and then return to the site to post and share your own best practice experience.
GoToServiceLearning is the result of a wonderful collaboration between organizations and individuals. Youth Service America, America’s Promise Alliance and the State Farm Companies Foundation worked closely in its development with international service-learning expert and consultant, Cathryn Berger Kaye of CBK Associates. and ABCDBooks.org. We invite you to learn more about these organizations, and about Cathryn Berger Kaye.
GoToServiceLearning also adds a special thank you to the entire GoTo Project Team, who spent hours coordinating the many pieces on the site because they want to share their passion for service-learning with every teacher in America.
